  • the basics of GIS; ESRI ArcGIS
  • data sources and data processing including disease registries, demographics and environmental data
  • disease surveillance systems for bioterrorism and infectious disease outbreaks
  • environment and health; urban health; land cover change and climate
  • the use of global positioning systems for making maps.

Lectures, Discussions and Labs

Class time is divided between lectures, discussions and lab sessions.

Readings will be assigned each week for the following week. The readings supplement the lectures, form the basis of some discussions and include content found in the mid-term exam.

Lab assignments are designed to provide students hands-on experience with a variety of methods and software useful for the spatial analysis of disease and environmental data. Most of the labs can be completed during the lab session, but in some cases, additional time may be required to complete the assignments. Labs are graded as superior, adequate, inadequate The data and instructions for each lab will be available through the course web site. The primary software needed to perform the labs is available on the machines in Davenport Hall as well as some other labs on campus.

If you want additional individual training on the ArcGIS software, check with the instructors.

Grading

Your grade will be based on lab exercises and class assignment (50%), midterm exam (20%) and Final project (30%). Further details will be provided in class.
